On Track races the Mac

You know him as Greg Scott, Creative Director of On Track. The sailing world knows him as “Ike,” captain of his Concordia 47 sailboat, Big Country. Ike is currently harnessing the wind in the 101st Race to Mackinac—his 6th year as captain, and his 12th Mac as a sailor.
There are over 350 boats in the Mac this year, ranging from 30 to 90 feet in length. All of them started at the Monroe Harbor Lighthouse on Saturday, July 18th, and are sailing 333 miles north to Mackinac Island, taking between 40-80 hours to get there.

As of 3:00pm CT on July 20th, the Section 1 boats (Big Country’s category) were clustered around Grand Traverse Bay, about 5/6 of the way through the race. We’ll post the results of the race as soon as we have more information, so check back!

The Big Country crew for the 2009 Mac includes 12 sailors of its 20+ member crew, who operate the boat as two teams of six. The teams rotate on a watch system of four hours on, four hours off in a highly-focused mission to find more boat speed while steering the fastest course to Mackinac Island. And in answer to your question, no. Ike does not sleep.
We continue to wish Big Country safe travels and fair winds.
