What's New at Queen of Peace
Welcome, President Mary Klinefelter

Queen of Peace is pleased to welcome a new president effective July 2004. Mary Klinefelter brings to the position a broad background in education and industry and a commitment to Catholic women's education. She comes to the Peace Community from Olympia College in Merrillville, Ind., where she was responsible for all facets of management.

Previously, Ms. Klinefelter has had extensive experience in college management in Wisconsin as director of the western sites for Lakeland College and as dean of instructional operations for the Wisconsin college system.

"I am very excited about this opportunity to make a difference and be part of a wonderful school," said Ms. Klinefelter. "The student body of Olympia College is predominantly female, so I have experience in dealing with a large female population with its unique opportunities.

"I have worked in nontraditional roles as a woman engineer and in management in various companies," Ms. Klinefelter pointed out. "I believe this would set a good example to high school girls considering 'different' career choices.

"One of my most rewarding experiences has been mentoring high school girls," she noted. "An adult who takes the time to touch a life is rewarded with personal satisfaction, while the child is rewarded with increased self-esteem."

"We are so delighted to welcome Mary Klinefelter to our Queen of Peace Community!" said Principal Patricia Nolan-Fitzgerald. "As both an educational leader and an engineer, she brings a wealth of experience, a wide perspective and abundant skills and talents. Ms. Klinefelter's recent experience as a college president is a great leadership advantage for our Community, and her proven success years ago in a male-dominated Northwestern engineering field convinces us that she can confront the status quo.

"Queen of Peace has always attracted students who are independent thinkers and now we welcome a president who epitomizes bold, independent thinking. I look forward to beginning a strong partnership and to developing new opportunities to educate and empower Women of Peace," Ms. Nolan-Fitzgerald said.

St. Catherine of Siena Scholars

Three seniors were recognized as St. Catherine of Siena Scholars during the third annual Catherine Congress on April 30. This year's Catherine Scholars are Nicole Surico, Mary DeSimone and Cara Gorman.

Nicole researched the "Psychological Reasons for the Persistence of Racism," and studied with a diversity consultant, author and storyteller. Mary's project addressed the inequity in "Funding Allocation for Juvenile Diabetes"; she studied with a public relations professional for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Cara researched "Meeting the Needs for students with Physical Disabilities" under the guidance of a special education teacher at Blair Early Childhood School in Chicago.

The St. Catherine of Siena Scholars program, unique to Queen of Peace, engages selected students in an innovative and challenging academic opportunity to collaborate with a mentor and engage in rigorous research over and above their regular course of study. Scholar candidates choose a cross-disciplinary research project that answers a significant question that challenges status quo thinking with social change and justice in mind. During their study, they are mentored by professionals such as educators, physicians, attorneys and therapists. Upon completion of their projects, students defend their research before their mentors, parents, teachers and candidates in the program.
